March 2008 |

Our fly boxes are filling up in preparation for the upcoming season. While winter tying is relaxing, everybody we know is itching to get back on the water. Winter fishing on the Big T, the Reef and other locations helps keep the memories alive, but there's nuthin' like warmer weather, ice-free water and actively feeding fish to get one's blood flowing.
Laughing Grizzly/Trout Unlimited Kids Learn to Flyfish Course The Laughing Grizzly/St Vrain Anglers Kids Learn to Flyfish classes are going well, with eight kids participating- five boys and three girls. We've had the first two tying classes, and the third and final tying session will be held on Saturday March 1. Mid-March we'll be learning about fish, bugs and stream ecology, followed by on-stream pursuit of bugs abd other trout food, and a casting/fishing session in mid-April. Check out the pix- thanks to Ben Brown for his fine camera work. We can always use volunteers- contact Dick Shinton at rashinton@gmail.com if you would like to help. The Laughing Grizzly is holding a raffle for a Winston "Tom Morgan Favorite" 8' 4wt rod. This is a two-piece rod with a medium fast action that will make lovely dry fly presentations, but with enough backbone for longer casts. The net proceeds (after our cost) will benefit St Vrain Anglers Trout Unlimited Chapter kids' programs. Only 50 tickets will be sold at $25, so your odds of winning are great. The drawing will be held the night of SVA's annual auction (5/2/08); you do not need to be present to win. And... if you don't win the rod, you're still a winner- your losing ticket is good for a 10% discount on a one-time purchase (excluding rods) at the shop.
Trout Unlimited
Speaking of TU, we are all members and urge you to join as well. TU has a special half-price ($17.50) deal for new members. Pick up an application at the shop.
SVA's annual fundraising auction will be held this year on Friday May 2 at the VFW in Longmont. Theirs is the only auction on the northern Front Range, and merits your participation. The format will be the same this year as last- a free picnic style cookout followed by silent and live auctions. Proceeds are split between general project funds (40%) and the St Vrain River Project (60%).
Fishing Reports
We've always maintained an up-to-date fishing report on our website, and we have added a new feature, the FishLog. We`use the FishLog to update you on our trips, but you can tell us about your trip, and we'll publish it in the Fishlog. Check it out.
What's New in the Shop
Tying Materials
Not too much here, but what there is, is cool. We've added new UTC thread colors, so we now have every color they make. We have cactus chenille from Hareline for those big fish bugs. Nymph and hothead leech afficianados will like the new bead colors (chartreuse, fluorescent red and metallic red) from Cyclops. Those of you who foam at the mouth will go for the broad array of Loco Foam. The newest soft hackle product is American speckled hen backs. They come in several colors and are great for soft hackle flies and nymph legs, etc. Last but not least are new colors of rabbit strips, including the ever-popular flesh and fleshy pink.
Accessories
Thingamabobbers are sweeping the country! Well, maybe not, but these little doodads are great strike indicators. Thingamabobbers are little soft plastic bubbles that loop on your leader easily, staying where you put them, but they're easy to adjust.
For those of you with an interest in bugs, we have added bug seines and entomology kits. The seines can be used to detect what's in the water, and the entomology kits help you identify and capture the little critters for future reference. Gear Are you a bass fisherman? Check out Sage's new bass flyrods. They're made for throwing big flies and catching big fish, and Sage makes unique matching lines. Books and CDs
The newest thing in fish porn is here- Landon Mayer's "How to Catch the Biggest Trout of Your Life". Mayer shares his secret tactics for finding and catching trophy trout. You'll be amazed at the pictures, and you'll be a better fly fisher for reading this terrific book.
Two new CDs have arrived. Pat Dorsey's Nymphing Strategies will teach you this Front Range master's techniques for catching more trout; Barry Reynolds's Pike on the Fly is a great resource for anyone who wants to stalk these voracious predators with a flyrod.
Classes
We've been offering two Fly Tying 101 classes each month at $55.00, and we will continue them; check the display board at the shop or the website for schedules. Individual classes are $75.00 and can be scheduled at your convenience. That's it for this month. See you in the shop or on the water. The Laughing Grizzly Staff
