What's New in the Shop
Tying Materials
We say it in every newsletter, but we are receiving new materials nearly every day. We have nearly doubled our materials display area in the past month. New arrivals include a selection of Dave Whitlock's very buggy dubbing blends, new Flashabou colors, a new CDC selection, Whiting bugger packs and 100's packs, and so much more. Soon to arrive are a complete selection of rubber and silicone legs, even more dubbing types and colors, more hackle products and a greater selection of tying tools. It's our goal to have the best selection of tying materials in Boulder, Weld and Larimer Counties, and we're well on our way.
Scientific Anglers Sharkskin Line
Scientific Anglers displayed its new Sharkskin fly lines at the AFFTMA retailer show in September. We don't know about you, but we've become pretty immune to outlandish product claims, so we didn't pay much attention to the "floats higher, casts farther" hype. Now that we've had a chance to cast and fish with it, however, we're singing a different tune. Here's Dick's review:

"Those of you who have fished with me know that long casts are not my forte. When it's windy or when I'm in a situation that demands longer casts, I bring out my 8' 6" 4wt Winston BIIx that is rigged with a 5wt line. I can feel the rod loading better with the heavier line than with the 4wt line recommended for it, and I can make the casts I need to." I was always frustrated that it took a heavier line to make the rod perform like I thought it should.

"When we received our sample 4wt Sharkskin, I spooled it up and took it with me for a day of fishing in Moraine Park, where the wind blows reliably hard most days. In a nutshell, I was impressed. The Sharkskin floated higher than any line I have ever seen, like a tire on the surface of a road. Because of this high float, it mends very easily. It cuts through the wind like no line I've ever fished, and made me a much better caster. The line zips (literally) through the guides and picks up from the water very smoothly. The 4wt Sharkskin made the BIIx work like it was supposed to. I'm a fan."

We've got the Sharkskin lines in stock in 4, 5 and 6wts. Come in and test cast one. We're sure you'll be as excited as we are. The price: $99.95 and worth every single penny.

Trips
A guided trip makes a great gift for your favorite angler. we can fix you up for a trip on local waters, the Reef or the San Juan. There's plenty of local fishing in the winter, or your giftee can wait for balmier days next spring.
Reports
Fishing locally and around the state is still good. Check out our up-to-date fishing reports before heading out. Last week, several of us fished the upper Big T in the Park and caught 20+ fish each in a little over three hours. Most were browns between 9" and 15". San Juan Worms in red, purple or pink were the top patterns. Ask Mike about the success he had with his Chamois Leech on trophy suckers- a real tribute to his angling expertise.
Books
Books make great gifts and expand your fishing and tying expertise. Here are some recommendations:
  • Barr Flies- John Barr. Learn to tie Barr's great patterns by following Charlie Craven's fabulous step-by-step photos.
  • Advanced Fly Tying- A.K. Best. A.K. is a legend, and this book helps explain why. Lots of helpful tying tips and tricks and great patterns illustrated with A.K.'s great photography.
  • Tying and Fishing Soft-Hackle Nymphs- Allen McGee. Soft hackle flies (what we old guys call wet flies) are experiencing a renaissance. McGee's book shows you how to tie them and how to fish them effectively.
  • Tying Flies with Foam, Fur and Feathers- Harrison Steeves III. Steeves is a real innovator in the use of foam to tie fishy bugs. This book is worth it for the Los Alamos Ant pattern alone.
